The Hogar de Amor Story

Home of Love

A Storm Becomes an Opportunity

Hurricane Mitch, the most deadly Atlantic hurricane in 200 years, stalled over Honduras for two days in October, 1998 causing extreme flooding and destruction and leaving over 15,000 people dead or missing. Years later, the damage to the country’s physical and social infrastructure has yet to be overcome. Families were torn apart by death and thousands of children were orphaned. Arvil Smith and his wife were serving as Baptist missionaries at the time and witnessed the devastation first hand. While driving through the streets after the hurricane trying to determine how they could help, they became aware of the many homeless and abandoned children. Overwhelmed with sadness for these children, they knew they had no choice but to reach out and do something. The Smiths remained faithful to their vision and soon after Hogar Amor was built, consisting of a children’s home,, a Christian school and a church where Pastor Smith preaches. He and his wife, Miriam are the “parents” of the children, having dedicated their lives to them.

Imagine being a child and being completely alone in a frightening world.  Imagine growing up without the love, guidance and encouragement that only a parent can give, living without a reliable source of food, shelter, medicine or clothing. For too many Honduran children, they don’t have to imagine this.  It describes their daily lives.

Within the country of Honduras, thousands of children become orphaned or abandoned each year, some as a result of the death of their parents, some as a result of extreme poverty.  Many children are surrendered to orphanages by parents or guardians who are simply unable to feed them; others end up on the streets, living an existence that spirals downward into daily acts of desperation in an attempt to survive.

Because the Honduran government has extremely restrictive adoption policies, international adoptions are nearly impossible—a child’s only hope rests on the compassionate hearts of others who may choose to provide for them.  This coming Christmas and Spring Break, you will have the opportunity to invest one week with these children and make a difference in their lives.  Help Fix What’s Broken in the world, by remembering these young ones, imagining a better future for them, and working to share hope that lasts for each precious child.
